Rare pair of Decca AL1500, the ‘French version’, as designed by Jean-Claude Fourrire for Decca in the mid 1970s.
There were two versions of this speaker. The British version used the same tweeter but a slightly different woofer unit, and a simpler cabinet construction. I’m guessing the French AL1500 must have represented Jean Claude Fourrire’s original vision, with a separate bass enclosure and reflex loading. In addition, the French cabinets used real wood veneer (as opposed to ‘wood effect’ vinyl covering) and a special interior lining to dampen cabinet resonances.
There is a fair amount of information on the internet about these, most notably on the Sound Fountain website and FrenchVintageHiFi.
Having owned both the English and French versions of these speakers I would say the latter have the edge sonically, though both are very good performers which will not sound out of date today.
These speakers worked wonderfully with valve and transistor amplifiers alike. The ribbon tweeter has amazing clarity and openness which hasn’t really been improved upon if you ask me.
They are in good, unmolested condition, with general signs of use, to be expected from speakers 40 years old. The grills are a good snug fit and do not have pulls or snags. They operate as they should. One of the badges is missing but I have the other. It should be fairly straight forward to have another badge made if you wanted to bring them back to original condition.
The specifications are as follows:
– Two way speaker- Max admissible power: 80w- Crossover point: 2200Hz- Frequency response: 60Hz – 20,000Hz (+/- 2.5db)- Frequency response: 60Hz – 80,000Hz (+/-6db)- Harmonic distorsion: less than 1%
Decca speakers will always have a special place in the history of audio I feel. I have gone back to multi-amping my horns and now selling some spare audio equipment to free up some space, but I will be keeping a pair of Decca tweeters for my high frequencies!
Shipping:
I’m happy to ship these worldwide bu please note international shipping will be expensive, so be sure to contact me for an accurate quote to your country. Below are some indicative rates for shipping in two separate boxes, from the Interparcel website:
Far East: 425 USA: around 350 Europe: 120UK: 60 or I can deliver for 30p/mile (within reason!)I will use new triple walled boxes lined with 2in (50mm) polystyrene insulation board, with layers and layers of bubble wrap around the speakers. The cost of the packing materials (around 25) will be factored in to the shipping costs.
The opening price reflects the rarity of these speakers and the fact that I am little reluctant to see them go!
Thanks for stopping by and please contact me with your questions.
