Yamaha PDX11 iPod Speaker White
Online Review:This is no midget portable speaker as you can tell from the scale of the docked iPhone here. The octagonal frontage around the Yamahas perforated steel grille is a full 21cm across a diagonal, while behind that it buckets back to a similar depth, looking like a big marine torch to be waived when someone falls overboard. On the top are power and volume buttons along with a standard Apple dock for iPod or iPhone, while theres a grab handle behind the dock so you can easily carry around what might otherwise be a rather awkward shape.

And carry it around you may, because the base holds a battery compartment into which you can insert 6 AA batteries and then head out with your 1.5kg of PDX-11 to whatever outdoor or temporary environment you may wish to bless or disturb with your own personal choice of iTune.

Value in construction and capabilities, then, but what about sonics? At first listen we thought the bass from the four-inch woofer was a little much, but we became attuned rapidly to what is an enthusiastic outdoor kind of sound, strong and clear on upper bass and midrange, the treble fairly tame so as to never get brash, and the whole simply marvellously enjoyable. In the acoustic openness of the great outdoors, it sounds a little more box-bound, but still good on the ground and quite remarkably robust in the bass, certainly energetic enough to annoy a good number of adjacent people at the beach or park. After a period out on our balcony, one neighbour brought out his lawnmower in protest at its far-reaching sonic prowess. Which is fine; we dont like them much.

We would happily live with the PDX-11 over several far more expensive docks weve reviewed, and we were happy to load it with a fresh set of alkalines, turn it up pretty much full, and let it play till it died, which turned out to be about six hours.
Its mono, of course (this occurred to us quite late; its not really a negative here), and theres no radio. But theres still an auxiliary minijack input, and even a small remote control, the same excellent design as comes with the award-winning PDX-31 dock.

Available in black, deep blue, white and the hilarious Android-green of our review sample, Yamaha’s PDX-11 is a barnstorming, park-enlivening, market-shaking marvel of a portable/mains speaker dock. If you like the aesthetics, get one for the patio before they sell out.
