Desktop/home audio DAC based on Wolfson WM 8740 complete with quality 12 volt 2A AC power supply.
I have had this very well made Chinese unit in regular use for about 18 months acting as an offboard DAC for my Arcam CD transport. It is housed in a small metal enclosure and has been completely reliable.
As you probably know the WM8740 is highly regarded and after several component upgrades sounds almost as good as my Beresford Caiman SEG which is testament to the design and build of this little device.
I have upgraded several components – mainly in the power supply/rail areas as these bring the greatest improvements.
Ultra low noise 5volt regulator, Philips soft recovery diodes, Oscons, Elna silmic II, Panasonic FM as appropriate.
The opamp is on a carrier so you can experiment with others – I have settled with the supplied 5532 as it sounds very good to me in this arrangement. The USB input is untested as I have only ever used the coax, but it should work fine.
