Put Bad Company ‘I can’t Get Enough’ on your TT and the opening drum clout will knock your head off if at volume. These were the best speakers I heard in the 80s and can still be enjoyed today. You couldn’t buy mine for any money. Loads of bass, (old style cabinet rattling bass) loads of midrange, and a sweet treble. Can’t wait to hear my new AT-150MLX through them! Got my sister a pair of bookshelf KEFs last year (approx 450) – I’ll keep my Dovedales thank you.**You will be really hard pressed to find a pair of speakers thatgive the depth, richness and fullness of sound these units present. It isimpossible to defy physics, and a large (nowadays unmatched for size) 30 cmwoofer provides a depth of sound from low volume, matched only nowadays bysub-woofers (but too often overwhelming other complimentary speakers when all needed islow volume punchy sound !!) Note the units have a had a Clean Out, Soft Restoration and Service, Thecabinets were brought to state good enough to be placed in a living area. Note part of the restoration plan was to also re-cap. With the serious illness of the restorer this never happened. Very importantly the speakers still function brilliantly in standard mode (as with almost every other speaker), just now without the option of ‘crossover fine tuning’. You could easily remedy with some attention and dexterity, which I don’t possess.These are grand speakers. Proud and statuesque. They exist in that classic style of bold,square-shaped ‘Majestic’ units somewhat in the tradition of Rogers, Harbeth and ATC.These also are supremely elegant, very well crafted ‘furniture’ items. They follow that original shape of 3-way, wide frontbaffle, large woofer units. A 30 cm woofer – nowadays totally unheard of inanything contemporary, immediately draws attention on the front panel then – supplemented by theallegedly much favoured ‘purple’ tweeter on top and excellent mid-range unitbetween them both. Of critical importance to anybody interested in thesespeakers, is that the near ‘irreplaceable’, very large, perfect, very durable, rubberbutyl-type woofer surrounds, are still flexible and beautifully functional. These were single owner speakers. Bar marks on the bases from various placements, these speakers are verywell cared for units having enjoyed really respectful use. All drive units areunmarked and indistinguishable from new. The fabric covers; original,perfect, with no pulls or loose threads. Sound is very much as expected – full,rich and very detailed. A subwoofer to the largest extent, is rendered almostunnecessary. Had we not had so many otherspeakers, and been governed by space limitations, we would have kept these. Minor point but note, we were informed that soon after purchase, a crossover wire hadcome adrift and when Wharfedale ‘repaired’ this under warranty, they allegedly misplaced the small back plate and used one from their workshop whichcarries slightly different control knobs – but that affects nothing. These speakers areotherwise perfectly complementary and simply superb.
