Pair of Vintage Valve Monobloc amplifiers originally made by the Whiteley Electrical Radio Co. of Mansfield in around 1956 with a pair of Whiteley Junior Bass Reflex Corner Console Speakers with Stentorian drive units.

The amps were substantially upgraded (including new polyprop caps and Vishay resistors) by Russ Andrews in the 1990’s when he operated under the name of RATA and did a lot of that kind of work.

The amps use a double-triode (nominally ECC83 but currently using an equivalent), 2 x EL84 and a GZ34 rectifier and are thought to be basically a Mullard 10w design.  The output transformers are designed for a 16 ohm load. They come with copies of the original factory circuit diagrams as well as Whiteley’s promotional material from the period.

Each amp has its own Whiteley “Stentorian” Junior Bass Reflex Corner Console Speaker. The speakers were renovated about 20 years ago. The original plywood box is inside the extremely rigid and inert cabinets (made at considerable expense by a joiner) that can be seen in the photos. The cabinets were strengthened with six strong bracing bars fixed through the plywood and then the board was fixed to the plywood so there is no sign of the woodwork inside. The drivers are wired (using Kimber cable) directly to external speaker posts, so the crossover boxes are outside the speakers. The cabinets are stuffed with acoustic wool and come with green slate bases – overall, a massive improvement on the originals.

The drivers are original – a horn tweeter with a “full-range” 10″ Stentorian model  H.F. 1016.

The crossover circuits were rebuilt and tuned with a lot of careful listening.

All in all, this system is an excellent sounding and very rare piece of post-war British Hi-Fi history.

Collection from Bournemouth preferred (always a good idea where possible).
