This Clarke and Smith record player was used in an English college and was upgraded as the years went by. The College had a local engineer fit a set of Mullard amplifiers and use separate loudspeakers, rather than the standard one which was fitted on the front of the unit. The record player was also upgraded to a Garrard 100, which was able to play stereo records and still retained the stacker feature of earlier models.
Please note that there are no loudspeakers included in this listing, just the record player you see in the photographs.

The turntable was serviced regularly. Last month I had the Garrard thoroughly serviced again, this entailed a full strip down, deep clean and application of modern lubricants.

This is a four speed turntable which is able to play a number of records one after another. One interesting feature its ability to recognize different sized records stacked at the same time. The needle is then able to drop at the start of each record regardless of its size.

All functions on the record player work as they should. Records are dropped onto the platter, the arm returns, then plays the next record until the last one. The record player then returns the arm to its rest for the last time and switches itself off.

This is a four speed turntable which is driven by a rubber wheel, rather than using a belt.

The flip over stylus is fine on 78s but the 33 looks a bit worn, new ones are easily available and cost peanuts.

The Mullard amplifier set consists of 2 mono block amplifiers, a pre-amp and a power supply, and is configured to play in stereo.

The unit is switched on by the switch you see in the  top front right by the record player, the small red light operates as it should.

Cosmetically, there is some wear to the cabinet and some some small bits of veneer have chipped off. Considering its use and age it still looks very presentable.

The platter mat was at some point replaced with an aftermarket one, the original ones had a tendency to degrade.

There is a spot of missing paint on the platter edge and a couple of blemishes on the tonearm and headshell, you should be able to see this in the photographs.

There is also a scratch on the bottom left of the top plate itself.

There is a  blank copper badge inset on the top of the lid, this is in good condition. At some point the initials of the college were to be engraved on the inset, this never happened it’s still blank.
The lid catches are lockable, the original key is present and both locks work well.

The output utilizes a standard  stereo headphone socket.

As you can see in the photographs the chap who fitted the amplifiers also made his own “decals” for the controls. He also marked all the internal connections for ease of servicing.

Please have a good look at all the photographs and feel free to get in touch should I have missed anything.

The record player will be posted promptly and packed as it should. Everything will be padded and any parts likely to move in transit will be secured into place. You are welcome to pick the record player up in person, in which case payment on pick up will be preferred.

Please note that the postage stated applies to UK mainland standard addresses only. UPS will charge more for some parts of Scotland and definitely more for UK islands. If you are unsure whether this applies to your location feel free to get in touch and I will check for you.
