Thorens TD-160 mkII Turntable – Boxed, Unused – KJ West Modified This is a new one on me – apparently KJ Leisuresound (now KJ West One) used to modify TD-160s and this is one. It was seemingly bought and then never used. The modifications that I can see are a different bearing with a much more substantial mount, a threaded spindle with a matched clamp and a thicker armboard which was intended for a Mission 774. There may be more mods inside, I didn’t take the bottom off to look.
On the downside, the deck was stored in a slightly damp environment and the platter is rather crusty looking. The mat is also a bit discoloured but neither of these problems will be hard to put right. The belt will need to be replaced obviously because it’s as old as the turntable. On the upside, the lid is absolutely perfect and the rest of the deck is pretty mint too – the former owner had more hi-fi than time it appears.
It has an AC synchronous motor, ie it’s the frequency of Current Alternation that governs the motor speed. The pulley is for 50Hz so if your local mains frequency isn’t 50Hz it won’t run to speed. Therefore you’ll either have to source the right sized pulley and fit it (without bending the motor spindle) or regenerate 50Hz AC at 220-240 V. The latter is preferable because re-creating 50Hz will smooth out a lot of the lumps and bumps in the supply and give more consistent rotation and therefore better sound quality.
