“the electro” sometimes known as Otala amplifier named after Dr Otala is the original design which launched Electrocompaniet (Electric company in Norwegian) into one of the best known High End manufacturer in the world. The design integrity offered Total HarmonicDistortion ( THD) reduction which often cannot be measured but heard only through subjective listening ( part of all Electrocompaniet design today) and is often said to be the biggest weakness and stumbling block in solid state amplification for music. The concept of Transient Intermodulation Distortion (TIM) was introduced by Dr Matti Otala to the 44th Audio Engineering Society which led to the design of this amplifier. With only 20db of global feedback and stability obtained the sound is surprisingly tube like. Sounding more like a musical instrument it was described as the best sounding solid state amplifier ever designed by critics in the press. If you are a valve aficionado the anode voltage on a valve often in excess of 450V connected to a output transformer for matching delivers low sound pressure level (SPL) and often high efficiency speakers are a needed to get meaningful volume for some genre of music like rock as a example. Solid state does not suffer from this but many subjective listeners say there is a harshness almost screeching noise often referred to as coloration added due to internal noise introduced by transistorised circuits. It was the aim to remove this in a paper presented to the IEE by Dr Otala which led to eventual design and manufacture of the 2 channel amplifier.Own this amplifier and hear why it has a cult following.
