Super Rare Linn LK280 Power Amplifier with Spark Power supply
This is the very last edition of the LK280, Linns flagship power amp at the time. DIY modders had been running 2x LK280s but cutting one channel out in each, effectively producing a crude dual mono.
Linn responded with a much more elegant and effective solution, taking the transformer and power output stages out of the LK280 itself and rehousing them in the Spark regulated power supply, keeping the dual mono philosophy throughout.
The shielded power transformer occupies most of the Spark’s interior, the two amplifier channels are mounted vertically along the sides next to their heat sinks. Each channel has its own power supply.
Its effectively two mono power amplifiers, fully regulated and with Linns technically advanced circuit design and protection systems. Awesome power, stackable if you want to run bi or tri amped and sounding absolutely brilliant.
If you read the forums, many prefer this combo to the Klout which was the LK280s successor. Dont get me wrong, the Klout is a fabulous amplifier in its own right, but this rare LK280/Spark sounds better in mine and others opinions.
The mainboard is practically identical to the Klout, but in the Klout everything is in the one box, not split into separate units.
Its a substantial improvement over the base LK280 as well as others like NAP140, 180, Exposure etc.
The Spark connects to the LK280 via two dedicated Right and Left power plugs. The Spark itself takes TWO power cables, one for each channel. Then you have a choice of either RCA or balanced XLR inputs from a pre-amp or like I am running mine, direct from a Dac. One set of speaker outputs for each channel completes the connections.
It looks complicated on the rear plate, but just spend some time thinking the signal path through and the dual-mono configuration and it becomes obvious how to hook it up.
Typically you’d run this with an LK1 Pre amp or like we did in Soundcraft (when I worked there many years ago) with a Kairn or Kairn Pro. However, you can use many other pre amps of your choice. Plenry of power for demanding music and speakers, we powered SBLs, Isobariks, Kabers, etc etc with stacks of these. Some of best sound systems ive heard.
I’ve run one myself with ES14s, LS50s – Great results, gave the LS50s the power they really need. Ive just upgraded to Kef R3s.
Its the best home system ive owned now, truly awesome 3D soundstage, buckets of detail, precise control especially over bass and stereo imaging you can almost touch.
Even better than the Leema system i ran when i worked for them – Antila II eco/Hydra II/Xeta
Fully tested, fully working, there are a few marks on the casing but nothing serious.
Comes supplied with two brand new 3m power cables and the original 2x Linn RCA (pre amp) to XLR (LK280) leads.
This is a very rare and highly capable combo, a classic high-end benchmark produced by one of the premier British manufacturers. Its a top of the range product right up there holding its own with the Klouts, 250’s, 135’s snd other similar high end amplifiers of the world. Big big improvement over std LK100, 240, 280 and similar amps.
