Home cinema subwoofers fall into 2 types – Passive subwoofers and Active subwoofers. Both produce those lovely floor shaking, room-filling, deep bass notes that give your music and movies scale and slam. But for those who don’t know the difference, here’s a quick explanation:
Passive subwoofers do NOT have built-in amplification power to drive the loudspeaker and rely on external amplification power – usually from an amp or surround sound receiver. Your dedicated amp will have a high level output for the passive subwoofer and it will usually consist of the normal + & – speaker terminals – this connection carries the audio signal (bass frequencies) and the current to drive the loudspeaker cone in the subwoofer. The passive subwoofer will also have the same connections (+ & – terminals, much like your regular left and right speaker terminals). Passive subwoofers rely on external power, hence its name – passive.Active subwoofers have built-in amplification power for the loudspeaker in its box and is fed with a single or dual RCA connection that carries the bass signal from the amp, this is also known as a low level output which carries just the audio signal without the need for the current to drive the subwoofer cone. The Active subwoofer will have a single or dual RCA input that looks like a phono socket. The Active subwoofer will have its own power supply too – power lead and plug, hence its name, Active.
So, take a look at your amp’s subwoofer output to determine what type of subwoofer – Active or Passive – you require.A general rule is that home cinema systems (all in one kits/systems) tend to use passive subwoofer set ups whereas standalone receivers/surround sound AV amps tend to use Active subwoofer set ups. Occasionally you may find the odd home cinema system to have a subwoofer output for active subs – but that is the exception.Hope that demystifies the dark and murky world of subwoofers for those who don’t know. ;)Priced to sell quickly so snap up this bargain! No home cinema speakers set is complete without a subwoofer to produce the deep bass sounds. The Sony SS-WS551 subwoofer is a bass reflex type, which means that it operates efficiently and makes the lowest possible sounds.
