For sale a seriously underrated Sony CD player with two (one per channel)
Burr-Brown’s PCM58 DAC chips.
Lovely CD player from the golden era of CD playback
– last model before the highest ESD range.
Having almost the same internals as Sony CDP 228 ESD,
the CDP 970 was a strong contender to reach high after the ‘tube’
treatment and it has proven that it has unveiled a big potential:
I am not surprised why Sony’s engineers has chosen Burr-Brown’s chips
as the replacement for ageing/running out of supplies TDA 1541A.
Whole analog output stage originally based on op-amp has been bypassed
and replaced with a valve output stage.
From both DAC chips (after passive I/U conversion – 1% tolerance resistors in the circuit),
the signal feeds two Russian 6n2p tubes (tested and matched).Super-fast diodes has been fitted in the power supply section.
Additionally, most capacitors around DAC chips
has been upgraded to a quality brand new units
(Sanyo Os-Con, low impedance, Elna Cerafine, Panasonic FC, MKT. ‘IEC’ power inlet has been fitted.
Sorry, no remote controller but they are easily obtainable on ebay-luckily Sony CD players are happy to talk with the other Sony CD players remotes.
After the modification, it has been auditioned for no more than 10 hours.
