A very well preserved Sony CDP-911E CD player from 1993, made in Japan. This mid-price machine is crammed with the features of the more expensive ES series, and has solid build quality too. It uses Sony’s one-bit CXD2562Q High Density Linear Convertor DAC chip and the reliable Sony KSS-240A mechanism, for which optical pick-ups are still available. The 430x110x355mm case is pressed steel, while the fascia is aluminium alloy. The chassis is also steel, and the disc mechanism is independently sprung to reduce vibration. The disc drawer has a rubber gasket that seals outside vibrations. Being the E suffix European model, it gets vibration absorbing feet and gold plated phono sockets on the back for fixed and variable outputs. A single optical digital output is fitted.
The specifications are excellent it has a very low claimed total harmonic distortion of 0.0025% (1 kHz, 0dB), a signal-to-noise ratio of over 116dB and dynamic range of over 100dB. Channel separation is quoted at 110dB.
It has had a quiet life and there are very few signs of wear just a few very light scratches on the top case, which are hard to spot. Disc access is very fast, the mechanism is largely silent and the machine works just as it did when new. The remote control is missing. It sounds smooth and detailed via its internal DAC, but I have been using it as a transport for a Chord Hugo 2, and the combination sounds superb. This is a cheap way to get a really nice CD player from the glory days of silver disc. Item will be well packed.
