Short technical description.Rotel RCD 855 is certainly one of the very best CD players based on Philips TDA 1541A chip and built around CDM 4 laser drive.
Basically this is excellent quality CD player from very end of 80es, featuring highly professional approach to design.Classic TDA 1541 dac chip known as old good, but expensive multi-bit DAC. While more that 30 years passed since its first appearance the dac remains the “evergreen” standard in audio reproduction. It provides far more musical and delicate sound than formally “high performance” time slicing dacs available today.
The technical idea of the upgrade
This is quite common pount now that TDA 1541A DACs works and sounds even much better if its output stage is valve based. Technically this creates perfectly matched load for DAC and provides good quality audio signal with very low distortions. In addition the valve based output stage provides so desirable “tube sound effect”. We performed this valve conversion of the player presented in this auction. The stage is based on the 6N2 high mu triodes and high quality components, please refer pictures. To support improved sound quality we fitted good quality output connectorsPlease note that this is “pure valve” conversion, as you may see in pictures the original board of the player is depopulated. DAC output conversion and amplification made with valves only, no semiconductors after the dac chip Sound QualitySonic qualities of this player are exactly what you should expect from a high quality valve CD Player. As ususal with tubes the main effect is in “vocal range” indeed. It provides warm and nice sound character with “velvet” vocals and really great for saxophone and piano.
FURTHER UPGRADE OPTIONS.1.Sonic performance of trhis player can be improved even futher by fitting of precision low jitter masreclock. This modification is known to be very effcetive for better qulaity in digital domain, providing more accurate presentation of sound tage and perfect location of instruments in orchestra. Some improvement is noise floor is usual as wel, but not too important in comparisov with impressive detalization and spatial resolution provided by precise masterclock. Usually this upgrade has positive feedback from Jazz and opera listeners 2. output triodes can be upgraded to the very best “space” grade Russian made 6N2Pi EV “audiophile” valves (new old stock)3. DAC can be converted to Nonoversampling mode for more accurate reproduction and absence of timebase distortions4.Power cord can be replaced with IEC power socket to provide opportunity for use high grade “audiophile” power cables.
