REGA Planar 3, rewired RB250 REGA tonearm, ADC XLM Mk.III series cartridge
This early model Rega Planar 3 deck comes with completely rewired RB250 tonearm, branded for Michell Engineering, a well known designers and manufacturers of analogue and digital Hi-Fi equipment. For this refurbishment set-up I have included a subtle and sensitive ADC XLM Mk.III moving magnet cartridge. Although not new, the condition of this fine transcription turntable combination can only be described as impressive. The motor and main bearing have been chosen for being silent in operation and the original smokey perspex lid is almost without a mark. Drive belt changed very recently to a silicone rubber (red) version that keeps its elasticity longer.
The star performer however has got to be the RB250 tonearm, rewired internally with ISOKINETIK oxygen-free copper fine wire and, externally, with new, high quality shielded phono cables and gold plated phono plugs (with separate earth wire required for some amplifiers). In order to allow for the correct curvature of the phono cables leading from the tonearm, through the clamp on the plinth, the vibration-isolating sorbothane feet were lifted above the turntable base by 10-12mm using solid pads.
Tracking with 1.4 g tracking force the ADC XLM Mk.III performed exceptionally but I have no history for this particular elliptical stylus. I believe tracking at 1-1.1g should be easily achievable giving even better stereo and space perception. Strongly recommended.
