This is my beloved upright Sony PS-F9 vertical, portable record player. It is a part of history, and quite a feat of engineering from Sony. It’s the later (and rarer) version that followed the PS-F5.

I bought this, along with a couple of other unusual record players about 17 years ago, when I had dreams of opening a cafe that played and sold records all day.

Now, most of my vinyl is in storage,I have a family and I don’t play records at home. This has been in padded storage in a cupboard for most of the last 20 years – I have occasionally brought it out to give the motor a run, and I was preparing it to sell last year, when I had it serviced, and a repair on the clutch. This couldn’t be repaired satisfactorily, so the engineer found a work around. This was to glue the clutch plates together. This has had no noticeable effect on the unit or it’s function, but I wanted to mention it here for accuracy. You can see the explanation from the engineer in the last picture.

I’m not sure what the implications are of this, but it now works fine. However , if you are a complete purist, you should be aware that it has had this modification.

The unit can play both 12″ (30cm) albums and singles and 7″ (17cm) records, at either 45rpm or 33 1/3 rpm. (Although as you can see, it looks a lot better with 12″ records in it!)

It has two mini jack (3.5mm) stereo headphone outputs and a volume control on one side, and a line out on the other. I’ve tried all these sockets and they work fine.

There is a moulding on the back of the unit to allow it to be hung on a wall. It also works standing up on the fold-out feet (see picture), or it also works laid flat.

I have included a couple of screenshots of the manual in the pictures so you can read more.

There is no power supply, but it works on 4 AA batteries (not included). You can probably buy a suitable power supply , but a word of warning, according to the website I have listed below :
“Please beware that the PS-F5 and PS-F9 power (AC Adapter) sockets are non standard. The pin (inner) is negative and sleeve (outer) positive. This is the opposite of todays norm and the coaxial plugs on the vast majority of power supplies. Please dont blow up your turntable by plugging in any old 6 V DC power supply- be sure to check its polarity!”

I’ve never tried a power supply on this, so can’t guarantee the socket works – I’ve no reason to think it doesn’t, but the unit has had so little use in the last 17 years, I’ve always used batteries. The small piece of foam from inside the battery cover disintegrated, so I took that out. This does not affect the battery function at all.

I have a .pdf of the original service manual, which I will email to the winning bidder, which has schematics of the whole unit, so should explain which is the correct power supply if you decide to buy one.

There is a plastic cover (pictured, blue) that slots over the top of the unit when not in use, to keep out dust.

This record player, and it’s forerunner, the PS-F5, have quite a following, and there is a very useful website at https://www.ps-f5.com/ , which can tell you more about both record players, including where to purchase new stylii.

Please be aware that this is over 35 years old, and although it was ahead of it’s time, it is not a high-end turntable, and is showing signs of age – it’s not perfect and no warranty or guarantee is implied. Everytime I’ve had it out in the last few years it has worked fine.

I have attempted to list as much detail as possible, please ask any questions before bidding, and please only bid if you are genuinely interested and have a feedback of at least 10.

This is a rare opportunity to own a design classic. As far as I know there has been nothing like it since. I have always seen it as a work of art that plays vinyl!

As you can tell, I do love this machine, and even 17 years ago it took ages to find one – I bought it on eBay for a small fortune and think it came from the USA.  It’s now time for it to go to a new owner who will really appreciate it.*Records not included!I will pack carefully and post the unit fully tracked.

Thank you for reading, please ask any questions before the end of the auction and good luck!
