A unique Pro-Ject Phono Box MM/MC phonostage fitted into a new case with an over engineered power supply.

The original Phono Box shipped with a 16V AC mains adapter.  Inside the box, this was half-wave rectified with just one diode for each rail.  The half-wave rectified voltage supplied a reservoir capacitor which then supplied a 15V regulator with some filter capacitors.  A very primitive power supply indeed and part of the reason these units are so cheap.

I have upgraded the power supply by a significant margin using off the shelf parts and installed everything in an old steel case with a sturdy switch and an IEC socket.

A 12VAC twin output transformer rated at about 60 watts feeds a high quality rectifier and dual rail voltage regulator.  The output rails have been set to +/- 15V.  The original power supply components on the Phono Box have been removed and the new supply lines soldered to the board.

The case has been made safe with a soldered ground connection.  The large cut-outs originally intended for a heatsink have been blocked off with a piece of hardboard.  Whilst there are still some holes in the case, you cannot reach any live parts with a finger.

It looks ugly, but it sounds much better than the original with tighter bass and a faster overall response.

Supplied with the original Phono Box case and an earth cable with a croc-clip on one end and a 4mm plug on the other to mate with the ground socket on the chassis.

A phono stage for enthusiasts.

Here are the videos showing the Project in action.  I have used Shure SC35C MM, Ortofon 2M Red MM and Denon DL-102 HOMC to test out the Project.
