A rare chance to acquire a piece of hifi heaven. This is a lovely amplifier: it has a sweet but revealing and very authoritative sound. It is for those of us obsessed with sound quality, however – no bells or whistles here. It has 3 line inputs, CD, tuner plus one other which I use for my DAC/streamer, and a second auxiliary input that is connected to internal phono-stage circuitry to handle the output of a MM cartridge from your record deck. (Note – the unit is unusual in having this fitted, most don’t. I am impressed with the quality of the phono stage, too, having tried it against external phono stages costing up to 700.) There is the option for 4 or 8 ohm speaker connections.
I won’t go into technical details about the unit (eg the clever auto-biasing which removes the hassle from tube amp ownership!) because if you are interested in this you probably know all about it already.
I bought this amp new, from a reputable dealer, about 12 years ago. I have had it serviced over that time at Absolute Sounds in South London. The tubes need replacing every so often but that has been quite a rare event for me. You’ll notice that there are rather nice EAR tube dampers on the front four – I’ll sell them with these fitted. The unit has had relatively light use, particularly over the last few years.
It comes with its main lead and the original box and packaging (yes, I am that obsessive!).
If you’re new to tube amps, don’t be put off. There aren’t really any complications with this one like there are with some other high end tube amps to be honest. Plug it in, connect your CD player etc, switch on and be amazed at the sound quality. And admire the sexy glow of the tubes when the lights are low.
Because it weighs a ton (well, nearly!) and it is an intrinsically fragile item I am making this ‘collect only’. I am flexible about days and times and I’m sure we could work something out if you lived a little way away – contact me, if in doubt.
