Pioneer A405R Hi-FI integrated Amplifier Made in Japan with Remote

The A405R is an optimised for CD A400 series amplifier with highly evolved Mosfet technology that came during the last few years of japans golden ages of highly engineered Hi-Fi 70’s to Y2K. At this stage the listener wanted CD & MD & a very efficient discrete signal path in the ‘Direct’ mode was built in for this purpose. Now a CD circuit became a main player, rather than a digital signal travelling through a path best suited to Vinyl. Non directly it will perform very like the A400 for LP’s similar to before, but the direct button leads to a CD path of revelation on this machine thus it gained greater capability.
HI-Fi design was looking to go smart by now and fascia’s were becoming curved & less boxy appearance. It was also possible to pack in more technology & power in less space, and the A405R is a slightly slimmer amplifier than its illustrious cousins from earlier A400 series incarnations. Mosfet not only gave the increased oomph, but a even greater soundstage with a nice thickness to add to what is a class leading clean. Mosfet also has a quirk in that its sound in some ways mimicks the soundstage reminiscent ( loosely ) of valve sound as a happy coincidence. Once the golden era was over by 2K this kind of mosfet technology was never improved upon. Instead it was miniaturised and plasticised. It lost the components that gave character & the naturally occurring valve like emulation was lost by HD circuits. Thus ultimately the A405R is one of the last ultra high performing affordable amplifiers that both embraced aspects modern power but remained highly engineered. The cosmetic appearance was slightly simplified compared to earlier offerings & Pioneer subtracted some clutter on the fascia. Sleeker appearance with everything needed no more no less being more plug play forget and a bit politically correct. But proper according to those days gone by & the reverence those machine garner from a well built standpoint.
These amplifiers are excellent for those who listen to a lot of CD’s or Minidisc & it will perform LP’s just as well as previous A Series but with the Mosfet giving the soundstage character.
Simple to use – ultra reliable – uncomplicated. Although A405R is certainly a plain Jane compared to the hefty fully loaded muscle amps that came from Japan, it has 45 WPC of quite sophisticated clean power & a lot of bang for buck.
