Nakamichi DR-3
1992
Pristine Condition
A lovely, and one of the later models, bought in 1992, carefully used, and occasionally played. Never stored, and kept in normal music room, away from direct sunlight, in a smoke free home, without kids or pets.
It us stunning, with a clean fascia, and case top, sides, and sounds as it did when new, which is amazing!
If you have never heard a Nakamichi, then this DR-3 will blow your mind, as it is one of the best ever made, and whilst it is a 2 head, with its big sister being the DR-2, which is 3 head, this really does compete with it, and offered far better value, both then and now.
I was a sound engineer in the late 80s, through until the mid 90s, and we were then analogue, and mastering was 1/4” tape, using reel-to-reel, but the industry standard for cassette was Nakamichi. At home I would have this brand only, as, in all honesty, there was absolutely zero competition…. from any other manufacturer! This is why, with this cassette deck revival, the brand is still the most sought after, and the most expensive, just as it was in the 80s and 90s and even before!
This does not have the original box or original manual, but I have included a copy of the manual and an interesting flier, that gives some amazing details if this stunning deck.
The DR range was the last range that Nakamichi ever made, with the early DR range, as with this one, and then the last two at the end of the decade, with the DR-8 and DR-10. These had the up to date nylon gearing, not the rubber belts, and idler tyre, so, from a longevity point of view, these should go on for many years to come.
I worked in the recording industry during the late 80s through until the mid 90s, and of course we were analogue, with digital coming in later. Tape was important, in reel to reel, but also cassette was the mainstay for portability and for music and spoken word, and within the industry Nakamichi was the benchmark; not other manufacturer could get close. We used Nakamichi within the studios, and most of us did at home, too. The latter models, including this DR-3 were simply stunning, and today, using good quality tape, the quality would match and I believe outshine any digital source.
Will be sent well packed, and using Parcel Force, with tracking and insurance.
