NAIM NAP 200 DRPower Amplifier
One Owner (Me) From New 2016
Near Mint
Mine from new in late 2016, and in Near Mint condition, used very carefully, and sparingly, this is a stunning example of this superb and highly praised power amp, and being sold privately, by myself, so not a dealer’s trade in, without provenance. This partnered my NAIM NAC 202 pre-amp, until a few weeks back, in a really matched pairing. I upgraded to a NAIM NAC 282 pre-amp, which elevated the sound even further, but decided to choose the natural partner to that pre-amp, being the NAP 250 DR power amp, as the NAIM upgrade path is very accessible, although expensive! Hence, this superb peformer is reluctantly for sale and I must say it was 50/50 after comparing the two, as this really is a stunning amplifer, and so quiet with the upgrade! It is in Near Mint condition, and I rarely use that term. Just like all of my hi-fi equipment, I have always kept this in a dedicated music room, and in a house that is pet free, smoke free and chld free. I never stack or rack equipment, as it is all lined above, free to breathe and away from potential damage. This is totally immaculate.I was a recording engineer and producer in the mid 1980s, through until the late 1990s, and based in a top London recording studio. We used NAIM amplification in our studios, and I also bought into the brand at home, as a music fan, and have to say, still being a NAIM owner, this is a legendary, enthusiast’s marque, that never ceases to impress. Just read the many, many reviews over the last 40 plus years. This has a unique Grade ‘A’ transformer, which was hand selected by Quality Assurance, and fitted in 2018, after a service under warranty, as can be seen in the attached job-sheet. The reason being the usual NAIM hum, which many forums comment upon. Many people put up with it or are told it is normal, but it isn’t and I didn’t. NAIM said the standard toroidal transformer for the NAP 200 DR is usually Grade ‘B’ or ‘C’, and that some can even slip through as a Grade ‘D’, and that super silent Grade ‘A’ are simply hand selected, bench tested, fitted, re-tested, and have to be within exacting parameters, and that they are only able to do this, when a customer specifically complains, and the unit is scrutinised in depth.
As a result, I was informed by QA at NAIM that this one off personal service, that simply cannot occur on the production line, creates the finest, and most hand-built NAIM equipment out there! And this is super quiet, too!
This is one of the few DR NAIM NAP 200DR units on Ebay, so, what exactly, is a Discrete Regulator and what advantages does it bring? A regulator acts like an amplifier, taking in a DC reference voltage and amplifying it to the voltage required by the circuit(s) it is powering. The DR takes in unregulated raw DC from the transformer, and delivers near pure DC at the point where its needed. This ensures a low-noise, low-impedance power supply, immune to effects of the load on the regulator and the temperature at which it is operating.Whilst the higher NAIM NAP range can be upgraded to DR from non DR, the NAP 200 isnt upgradable, as the incorporation of the DR supply for a connected preamp would entail a whole new main circuit board, as the new DR sits in a cut-out to one side of the board.
It also has the original box, with matching serial number, connection cable, power cable, and unused user’s guide.
This is just a little of What Hi have had to say about the NAIM NAP 200 DR:
”A more than competent performer.Highly sophisticated sound with bags of power and finesse, combined with top-quality build and minimalist styling.
Naim has always gone its own way and that’s one of the reasons the company is widely acknowledged as one of the premier British high-end amplifier brands, and attracts such a loyal following from its devotees.
Paired with the NAP202, the NAP200 stirs the soul with hard-charging tunes such as Massive Attack’s Angel, where it hammers out the beats with the best of them. It’s rated at 70 watts per channel, but it had no trouble driving a range of speakers, including Wilson Benesch’s Arcs, ATC’s SCM 50s and Proac’s Response 2s, to high levels. No wonder Naim says this amp is happy driving speaker loads right down to 2 ohms for long stretches.
But it’s the limpet-like grip at low frequencies that really impresses, though rhythmic drive isn’t far behind.
Detail resolution is right up to class standards: the presentation is cohesive yet it’s easy to follow individual instruments, even when the mix gets complex.”
I was a recording engineer during the late 80s and through until the mid 90s and produced and engineered commercials for independent radio, and then drama, for the BBC. For me quality equipment is just as important at home, as at work, and NAIM were and still are my choice of the very best in sound, but also design, and the famous NAIM support, even after years of use, one can still call them for any advice on any model, ever made!
