The NAD PP1 is a little gem of a phono preamp. Made by the company responsible for the most famous hifi amp of all time, the 3020, they applied the same philosophy here by producing a phono stage with just one job, connect moving magnet cartridges to amplifiers with no phono stage. No frills, no fuss, just good sounding components at a great price. If you want to know what the world thinks, there are plenty of reviews out there and here are a few: http://www.audioreview.com/product/amplification/preamplifiers/nad/pp-1-phono-pre-amp.html?p=2After fifteen years, any hifi can benefit from a few choice upgrades and I’ve chosen to do just that with this one. Firstly, one of the criticisms of the PP1 was the use of captive phono leads. NAD changed this on the PP2 and I’ve done the same. I’ve fitted gold plated output RCA connectors from the Neutrik Rean range, so now you can use your own quality phono leads. In addition, I’ve replaced the electrolytic capacitors with some of the best available today, Elna Silmic II and Nichicon KAs. These are brand new so will benefit from at least 30 hours of running in. The phono preamp sounds great now but over the run in period you can expect a general freeing up of the sound and more extension in both bass and treble. This is what NAD said in their catalogue:”The NAD PP-1 is a simple, amazingly inexpensive plug-and-play accessory that adds an excellent phono capability to any line-level pre-amplifier, integrated amp, or receiver. Its performance is amazingly close to that of units many times the price. The PP-1 has been recognised by the high end American journal, Stereophile, as a Recommended Component: a lofty accolade for such a diminutive device! ”
