Musical Fidelity X-10 v3 – Vacuum Tube Line Buffer (Meticulously Upgraded)
The Musical Fidelity X-10 v3 Line Stage Buffer is a superb addition to virtually any hi-fi system and is capable of upgrading the sound of an average/good/very good setup to the level of some very expensive high-end equipment.
There are numerous placement options for the X-10 v3 within a system, which Google will be more than happy to tell you about.
Mine is connected between CD player and amp/active speakers; without the X-10 v3, the sound is good but when connected, the transformation is just the cat’s pyjamas.
Effects:
Fleshes out and adds richness to the whole shebang.Smooths trebles and adds subtle low-level detail.Adds body and drive to the midrange.Adds weight and depth to the bass without muddying.Separates out the vocals/instruments giving them space and texture.Overall the sound is more analogue, fluent, engaging and natural.
Upgrades:
1) High grade ‘Little Pinkie SE’ power supply (this replaces the original dubious MF wall-wart).

2) Matched pair of brand new and original Mu-Vista Valves/JAN 6112 Philips.

3) Complete X-10 v3 Upgrade Kit fitted.

4) 4x matched npn and pnp output transistors.
5) Heat sinks for new transistors. Heat transfer via Bergquist Thermal Pad, correctly torqued up.
[The temperature after a 3hr blast, measured an average 22C, well below the 150C max].
6) Strategically placed Sorbothane Domes beneath and on the pcb board, to absorb component vibration.
7) Vibration deadening pads inside the casework to minimise vibration.
8) Replaced standard signal output wires with stranded Kimber Cable.
Condition: In best physical shape and working order.
