Monitor Audio MA3 series 2 Hi-Fi Monitor speakers.
I inherited these speakers so do no know a great deal about them or what condition they are in – visual they look pretty good.
About the speakers:
One of a very small group of loudspeaker systems of this size capable of handling 100 watts of programme power, the MA3 makes no sacrifice in terms of sound quality to achieve this end. A full three-unit system, the drivers are to a special ‘MA’ specification, and are thus unique. The vital mid-range is handled by a refined Bowers & Wilkins 160 mm Bextrene coned unit which possesses a wide exponential flare with a PVC surround termination. A high temperature capability aluminium former supports the 25 mm voice coil and the generous magnet is supported on a non-resonant die cast chassis, and the overall response extends over 50 Hz to 7 kHz.
A powerful bass performance is supplied by an E.M.I elliptical driver measuring 350 mm by 228 mm. The cone is a laminated structure of rigid fibre with a plastic inner layer and an applied surface damping. The centre section is of aluminium, with a PVC, low ‘Q’ surround. The high temperature voice coil is a long throw type on a 50 mm pole. A massive die cast chassis completes the unit.
The cabinet employs critical damping techniques, and forms a reflex enclosure loading the bass unit; a large separate sub-enclosure is used for the mid-range driver, withy the tweeters above. The vertical in-line format of the drive units imparts a highly stable stereo image, and the individual fuses for each unit provide complete protection against overload and amplifier failure. Intended for high power operation the MA3 can produce sustained levels of 106 dB linear at 1 metre distance, under programme drive conditions.
