This auction is for a Marantz SP-50 Dolby Surround Sound Processor. It is in used but good condition for its age. The main photo in this listing is a stock photo, the rest are of the unit itself or the manual that comes with it.
It was in use in my system until 2 weeks ago and worked fine. The SP-50 could be described as a vintage device as it was winning awards around 1990.
I should probably describe what I used it for as it may help you decide whether to give it a go.
I’m not really into home cinema, I use my HiFi system for music but over the years I did acquire a few spare speakers and on occasions I wanted to see if I could add in some surround capability to my music HiFi system. I found this device and thought, for the money, why not give it a go. The unit uses the line in/out connectors of a HiFi Amplifier (typically these would be tape rec / play connections) and then does the surround processing so it is not a dolby 5.1 or 7.1 processor. It does provide powered output to the rear speakers but the front left & right speakers will be run by your existing HiFi amp. It does have the capability to run a center speaker but you will need either a powered center speaker or a separate amp for the center (I got a cheap mini amp from ebay) or feed it into a soundbar or back to the TV if it has audio inputs. It does however have a phantom center switch that creates a center sound via the front speakers. All that I can add is that I got it all working fine and it did produce a room filling sound for both music and TV sound.
If you want to have some fun with surround sound for a few without scrapping your loved and more used music system then maybe give it a go.

Description
You provide the amplification for the L and R channels which appear on phono connectors on the rear. There is a built-in 30W power amp which will drive two rear speakers, but the rear channel is also available at line level on a phono should you prefer to amplify it yourself.
Center channel is output on a phono, and can be used 3 ways.
Phantom mode: You can ignore the center completely, the unit routes center signal equally to the L and R channels.
Small center mode: If you connect the center channel to a poor quality center speaker (like the speaker in the TV itself) then the unit will route center channel low frequencies equally to the L and R channels to compensate.
Normal center mode: If you connect the center to a decent speaker, no center info goes to either L or R.The levels of the rear and center channels is pre-set by individual controls before all 4 channels are put through one master volume control.
