LEAK DELTA 30 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIERVery good example of this classic UK designed amplifier, reputedly the first commercially available domestic transistorised amplifier in 1963. Listed in Imagine Home’s “most significant amplifiers of all time” at number 9! (http://www.imaginhome.com/images/partenaires/ten-most.pdf) Produced with audiophile listeners in mind and following on from Leak’s great 1950s valve amplifiers, it still sounds involving and detailed today. When Rank took over HJ Leak in 1969/70, they re-modelled the case of the Stereo 30 Plus and called it The Leak Delta 30 with only a few minor modifications.The Stereo 30 Plus, on which the Delta 30 is modelled was produced from 1967 and is different to the original as it has silicon rather than germanium capacitors and four removeable “daughter” boards carrying left and right power and pre-amp stages which slot into the main or “mother” PCB. The hand soldered wiring loom is a work of art in itself and the fact that the amplifiers still work after 40+ years is testament to the quality of design and production. Although amplifiers of this age seem low powered at 15WPC, the power is sufficient to drive reasonably sensitive speakers to decent volume. There is also noticeably little distortion as the volume is increased, unlike some later high wattage amps which can be unlistenable past half way.No “hair shirt” design as it gives flexibility with headphone jack, tone controls, choice of gain on two inputs. Also has two AC outlets for powering other Leak components, especially their tuners. Given the period it was produced with stereo yet to be universal, the front panel has buttons which offers stereo, mono, and two channel input of left and right channels. One pair of speaker outputs which are 2 pin DIN sockets. Can supply pair of speaker cables with DIN plugs if required.Good working order: all switches and potentiometers treated; no crackles, silent spots or poor switching. Power indicator lamp still works!Fascia very good with a few minor marks. Teak case is very good apart from damage to the vent on the bottom right hand side. One foot missing from bottom of case.On the front fascia from left to right: input selector for Tuner 1/Mic, Tuner 2, Tape Playback, Disc 1 and Disc 2; bass and treble tone controls; balance; power on/off/ volume knob with red pilot lamp; below are buttons for L/R Mono/Stereo selector; filters; headphone jack socket.On the back from left to right: Captive mains cable terminated with UK 3 pin mains plug, DC and AC fuse carriers, with spare fuses, voltage selector (110, 117, 130, 210, 230, 250V), 2 AC output sockets, ground/earth screw, case mounting bolt, speaker terminals (4-15 Ohms), tape record and replay phono sockets, High and Low gain switchable phono and line level inputs, fixed phono and tuner/microphone inputs.Sound is smooth, surprisingly powerful with good bass, excellent detail, separation and imaging with good placement of voices and instruments. Vinyl sounds good through a very good phono stage, the kind of equipment which is an expensive outboard option on many modern amplifiers.
