KENWOOD KA-3020+*PHONO, *SPECIAL EDITION* Amplifier . *Brilliant Classic. *See All Photos.The ‘amplifier wars’ of the 80’s comprised NAD 3020, Pioneer A400, Marantz PM 66SE etc. versus the rest? Allbrilliant machines, and the consumer really benefited here. We have been veryfortunate to have owned examples of all but deliberately left out from theabove list is the Kenwood KA-3020 SE – best of the bunch, maybe…… The Special Edition (SE) nomenclaturewas later overused at times, but for all above and the Kenwood 3020 SE featuredhere, this was very well deserved. Offered per photos, is a beautifulexample of this machine. The amplifier is indeed brilliant. Matched with qualityspeakers ranging from vintage Pioneer HPM 40s or TDL units to more currentB&W 685, Dali Zensor1, or even KEF Reference 1s, the amplifier still soundsstrong, powerful and punchy. Also linked to a good Technics, Dual or even Linn Turntable,this machine offers excellent sound. We repeatedly played this in the same system against a Pioneer a-400 connected to Focal Speakers. The frequency response does nothing to explain the amplifier’s perceivedtonal character, being virtually ruler flat well up into the tens of kilohertzand right down past 25Hz.This amplifier turns in a commendableperformance in a well thought out, uncluttered package.
