SomeWords About KEF: ‘Ofall art, music is the most indefinable and the most expressive, the mostinsubstantial and the most immediate, the most transitory and the mostimperishable. Transformed to a dance of electrons along a wire, its ghost liveson. When KEF returns music to its rightful habituation, your ears and mind, they aim to do so in the most natural way they can … without drama, withoutexaggeration, without artifice’. RaymondCooke, KEF founder. The company was founded in 1961 by Raymond Cooke OBE(1925 – 1995) and was initially headquartered in a Nissen Hut on the premisesof Kent Engineering & Foundry (from where the name KEF is derived) – a metal-workingcompany on the banks of the River Medway, near Maidstone in Kent. Cooke, anex-BBC Electrical Engineer, was keen to experiment with new materials andtechnologies in order to create products with superior acoustic quality thatcould reproduce recordings as natural as the original performance. From thevery beginning, the pioneering inventiveness of KEF loudspeakers was undeniableand now for several decades, audiophiles around the world have revered KEF forits innovative, high-performance loudspeakers. When KEF was founded in 1961, by Raymond Cooke and asmall group of like-minded colleagues, the prime objective was to designloudspeakers using the latest materials technology and with the bestengineering methods. The fact that KEF is one of the most well known andrespected brands in the audio industry is due, to a large part, to theinnovative drive units the company has developed over five decades. KEF driveunits have always been around the best on the market; they have used the latesttechnology, and have been manufactured in a controlled way to be consistent andreliable. They have been utilised not only in the successful KEF systems butalso in those of a plethora of other manufacturers and the home constructorswho chose to build them into their own enclosures. The units and the technologybehind them has gone down in history as a highly significant contribution thatKEF has made to the audio industry, a fact acknowledged in 1993 when RaymondCooke was awarded the Silver Medal by the Audio Engineering Society foroutstanding contributions to transducer measurements. UNI-Q: Of the many landmarkinnovations KEF has pioneered, arguably the greatest of all is the Uni-Q pointsource driver array, with its outstanding acoustic clarity and off-axisdispersion. With over twenty years of continuous innovation and development theUni-Q driver array achieves a level of sound quality over a broad area simplynot achieved from conventional speakers.
With Uni-Q, sounds come at you so naturally that it seems as if the musiciansor actors are actually there in front of you. Whether you are in the centre ofthe room or off to one side, recordings sound uncannily real and utterlyconvincing. Uni-Q achieves this because, unlike conventional speakers, thesound that is critical to the experience comes from the same point in space, and is produced in a controlled and continuous way over the whole audio range. Whether you are in the centre of the room or off toone side, recordings sound uncannily real and utterly convincing. It is not easy to produce a convincing andrealistic illusion of a live performance because the sound from a high qualityloudspeaker does not come from a single source, or drive unit. Two or moreunits are required to faithfully reproduce the entire audio spectrum from thelow bass produced by a concert organ or a cinema explosion, to the delicatenuances of the human voice in the midrange right up to the shimmering treble ofcymbals. Most loudspeakers have the midrange and treble drive units mounted oneabove the other, so the sound is coming from two different places, causingaudio ‘confusion’ and losing the chance of achieving a truly natural sound. With Uni-Q, the midrange and treble units are mounted at precisely the samepoint in space – allowing them to integrate perfectly and create the idealsound field for the listener to experience a convincingly natural sound. It has been well known for many years in the audio industry that one ofthe ideal forms for a loudspeaker is the ‘point source’ – where all the soundis radiated from the same point in space. To do this, the drive units (forexample, the bass and treble units in a two-way system) need to be mounted sothat their acoustic centres are at the same place. The problem in achievingthis was the sheer physical size of the treble unit, which prevented it fromfitting in the centre of the bass unit. Various forms of co-axial units emergedwhere the tweeter was mounted either in front of or behind the acoustic centreof the bass unit but these have significant drawbacks. The key to the inventionof Uni-Q was the arrival on the market of a new magnetic material calledNeodymium-Iron-Boron, which has ten times the magnetic strength of aconventional ferrite magnet. This material allowed a high sensitivity trebleunit to be made small enough to fit within the voice coil diameter of a typicalbass unit and so be placed at the precise point where the acoustic sources are’coincident’. With the acoustic centres at the same point in spacethe acoustic outputs of the bass and treble units are ‘time-aligned’ in alldirections allowing the designer to achieve perfect integration between theunits not just on one axis, as is the situation with vertically separatedunits, but in all directions. The first advantage of Uni-Q, therefore, is thelack of the vertical interference pattern of separated bass and treble units, which restricts the region of high quality sound output to only +/- 10 degreesabove and below the principle axis. This same effect not only limits thevertical listening area but also produces a dip in the total energy output inthe bass/treble crossover region, causing a distortion of the reverberantenergy in the listening room. In Uni-Q systems this effect is completelyeliminated. The second advantage of Uni-Q is what we call ‘matcheddirectivity’. With the treble unit mounted at the centre of the bass driver’scone, its directivity (the spread of sound away from the main axis) isgoverned by the angle of the cone, which also largely determines thedirectivity of the bass driver. So with the coincident mounting of the twounits, the directivity of the treble unit is adjusted to be virtually thesame as that of the bass driver. As a listener moves away from the mainaxis, the output of the treble unit falls off at approximately the same rate asthat of the bass unit, thus improving the uniformity of tonal balance acrossthe listening area, and improving the off-axis stereo imaging. The listener isnot, therefore, as limited to a central ‘sweet-spot’ as with conventionalspeakers. And, of course, the same is also happening in the vertical plane, sothe reverberant energy in the listening room maintains an even balance, addingrealistic ambience to the sound without introducing tonal colorations. The directivityis often referred to in engineering terms as the ‘Q’, and the ‘Unifying’of the ‘Q’ gives rise to the name ‘Uni-Q’. From a listener’s perspective, the combination of thematched directivity and precise time alignment in all directions gives significantlyimproved stereo imaging over a wide listening area, the realism of which isenhanced by the even balance of the reverberant energy within the listeningroom. QSeries:Thepleasure of sonic perfection:One of the life’s pleasures is to experiencethe intensity of an outstanding recorded performance in your own space. QSeries speakers by KEF bring you that pleasure in natural, accuratehigh-resolution sound.
First introduced in 1991, the multiple award-winning Q Series has longdelighted music lovers and audiophiles with outstanding sound quality andinnovative design. The Q Series, now in its 8th iteration, brings highresolution sound with more depth and more clarity. “Sit-anywhere”Uni-Q sound:At the heart of the evolved Q Series is the Uni-Qdriver array. The signature innovation places the tweeter in the acousticcentre of the midrange and bass cone, bringing the acoustic ideal of a singlepoint source closer than ever to realisation. The result is a more detailed, accurate three-dimensional sound image, which is dispersed more evenlythroughout the room than is possible with any conventional speaker. Uni-Q’sultra-wide dispersion is further enhanced through KEF’s ‘tangerine’ waveguideover the tweeter dome. New system design:To optimise the high resolution purity of theQ Series bookshelf speakers, the Uni-Q driver is repositioned to the center ofthe cabinet to reduce unwanted internal resonance and adding refinement tosonic clarity and detail. With the addition of the damped tweeter loading tubeproviding a gentle termination of sound produced from the back of the tweeter, lower treble performance is improved dramatically and a new low-distortioninductor on the crossover provides cleaner bass. Tweaking the tweeter:With the addition of the damped tweeterloading tube providing a gentle termination of sound produced from the back ofthe tweeter, lower treble performance is improved dramatically and a newlow-distortion inductor on the crossover provides cleaner bass. A word about drums andbass:The Q Series faithfully reproduces thesubtleties of powerful bass instruments. Low-frequency drivers now have alarger roll surround, along with a new spider suspension to produce cleanerbass at high volumes.
A new cone structure improves midrange clarity, and an enhanced Auxiliary BassRadiator (ABR) with a new surround and rear suspension delivers bettercontrolled and more impressive bass. CFD-designed port:Featuring a ComputationalFluid Dynamics (CFD) port design with the port repositioned to the rear of thespeaker, clarity is improved by reducing the audibility of the midrange leakagethrough the port. A rhapsody in ebony andivory:The sculpted Q Series finish epitomises ourapproach with seamless, sleek cabinets unblemished by visible fittings andjoins. Q Series speakers are coated with a fine satin finish in black or whitewith matching driver colours.
