AudioLegends Restorations since1984Rogers J 149 MK1 speakers in excellentcondition. Matchedpair No 10589 later examples.Totally refurbished: these wonderful matched speakers have beenstripped and refinished to a high standard. Probably the best examples.(As they are over forty years oldexpect some signs of wear there are some marks on the base.)The walnut discs have beenrefinished to a high standard and the steel mesh grilles cleaned and securelyfastened. New black acoustic foamhas been affixed to the rigid alloy enclosures. Allcapacitors have been renewed with highquality compatible replacements. All solder joints have been checked, theother components checked for degradation, electrical continuity and resistancevalues. The drivers have been cleaned and checked for sonic reproduction. Theyhave been tested for reproduction of CD, vinyl, radio and finally an acoustictesting CD.These classic innovative speakersare an infinite baffle sealed enclosure and very heavily damped with thickacoustic foam. Below the decorative caps at each end of the cylinder are twofibre discs held under tension via a steel rod, which run through the enclosurefrom top to bottom. Crossover and cable connections are in a separate metalhousing underneath the loudspeaker, housing a round printed circuit board.
The crossover uses quality components, and has a simple wire-woundpre-set resistor for adjusting and matching the tweeter level. The drive unitsused are from KEF: the classic B110 bextrenecone bass unit and matching T27Mylar tweeter.
Rogers was clearly influenced by Harry F Olsons classic Elementsof Acoustical Engineering in respect of cabinet shape versus sound dispersionand diffraction.
When it comes to positioning, the JR149is best placed close to the wall, with some toe-in. This little speaker reallydoes produce a big sound from a small box. The soundstage is expansive and theJR149 does a pretty good job of disappearing. Treble quality dictated by theKEF T27 tweeter is very revealing and off-axis response good. The JR149 doesnot require the head in a vice position as you listen, and stereo imaging isvery wide.
