THE PRINCIPAL FUNCTION OF THE GOLDENJACKS IS TO ATTENUATE HIGH LEVEL SOURCES. Why use attenuators? If only the word ‘attenuator’ rolled off the tongue, or had the marketing cachet of anything beginning with the letter ‘i’. Sadly there is no buzz word that can be used in place of attenuator – except, perhaps, Goldenjacks! It is best to explain the problems facing CD replay, before beginning to describe the Goldenjacks’ solution to this problem. Then the terms ‘attenuator’ and ‘attenuation’ will make more sense to a typical Hi Fi enthusiast reading this page. Some backgroundIn the good old days of Hi Fi, source equipment had outputs which generally matched the input sensitivity of the corresponding amplification equipment. In the 1970s and 1980s typical amplifier input sensitivity was about 100 millivolts for full amplifier output. Source equipment, like tuners and cassette decks, were generally well matched to this input sensitivity. With the introduction of Compact Disc, a rule book was established to standardise this exciting new sound reply medium. One standard was to set the maximum CD output level at a colossal 2 Volts (2000mV). Whilst typical musical programme would not usually generate the full 2 volt output, CD signal levels were, nevertheless, substantially greater than should have been connected to most amplification equipment available at the time. The net result was amplifier overload and the ‘harsh’ fatiguing sound that people came to associate with CD. During the 1990s amplifier line inputs were made less sensitive, at around 250 millivolts for full sensitivity. This helped, but did not entirely overcome the overload situation. It is generally accepted that the ideal input sensitivity for a CD input should be around 600 millivolts. A few credible modern amplifier designs reflect this – but they are few and far between. In the context of CD replay, an attenuator is a device to ‘reduce’ a CD player’s signal to enable correct matching with the vast majority of amplifier inputs. By virtue of careful design, and selection of excellent components, Goldenjacks attenuators perform this attenuation function without affecting the signal. The standard -10dB (Decibel) ‘Goldenjacks’ suit amplifier sensitivities of between 125 and 400 millivolts. For amplifier sensitivity of 75 to 125 millivolts, -14dB is recommended. For amplifiers of sensitivity between 500 and 600 millivolts, Goldenjacks are not generally required. Goldenjacks are also used by many headphone enthusiasts to attenuate the signal being fed into headphone amplifiers. The results can be staggeringly good. What are the benefits of attenuation?Well designed amplifiers can withstand many electrical abuses without causing damage to their circuitry. For instance an amplifier might claim an input overload margin of 20 times the nominal sensitivity, or protection against shorting of the loudspeaker terminals. These safe operating margins and protections are to cater for freak or accidental conditions, not typical usage. Connecting a CD player to an amplifier with 250 millivolt input sensitivity does not cause any harm to the amplifier, however the best sound will not be realised. It is difficult to draw perfect analogies but anyone should realise that ‘excessive’ conditions will lead to compromise. For instance no one would think it right to bake a cake in a furnace, nor would anyone, with a degree of discernment, want to view a work of art under stadia floodlighting – control and subtlety, respectively, would be lost. By achieving appropriate signal level matching, Goldenjacks allow the optimum sound of CD (and other high level sources) to be realised. Goldenjacks merely attenuate (lessen) the CD’s output to a level which is consistent with the amplifier’s input sensitivity. They do not alter the tonal balance, nor do they affect the purity of the sound. This is not magic, it is simply good electronic engineering practice. With Goldenjacks first installed, the sonic presentation will seem very different. Breadth and depth of soundstage will increase markedly. Detail, subtlety and nuance are effortlessly presented – much like good quality analogue. The all important mid-band emerges, bringing life to the sound, complimented by articulate bass and extended, sonorous, highs. At every level of equipment the improvements are significant. Budget systems begin to sound musical, high-end systems sound even more convincing. The benefits of Goldenjacks are also equally applicable to other high level sources; DVD, DAB, MP3, DAT, Minidisc, Wii etc. Goldenjacks can also be used to control the input to computer soundcards. What customers say?If you trawl through my feedback you will see numerous favourable comments on these attenuators. Hundreds have been sold to very appreciative customers. One Stateside user wrote;I got them on Friday. first goose bumps, shivers and then tears. Oh my God! I simply can’t believe that these simple devices can have such a startling impact on sound, but my ears leave me scarce little room for argument. How on earth can such an uncomplicated device deliver such profound changes? My system was already at the high end of the spectrum so you can imagine my dubious stance prior to ordering! Every aspect of the sounstage was noticeably affected. Thanks again for committing yourself to an honest product at a terrific price that makes such a difference. I don’t think I have ever spent less on a single improvement on any single item I have made to date, regardless of what that purchase was for! There are many more illuminating testimonials.
