For sale is my Garrard 301 oil bearing turntable with upgraded Rega/Moth RB250 tonearm. I have spent a few quid and quite a few hours working on this but other demands mean it’s time for me to part with it. For the keen audiophile there are plenty of further upgrades available if you’ve got deep pockets (e.g. larger platter, precision spindle, silver power cable and gold-plated IEC socket!!!!).

The turntable is in very good working condition and runs nice and quietly. Cosmetically it shows a few marks in the original enamel finish, mostly on the rear edge. (I think it had a previous life in hospital radio where it didn’t get the easiest life!) In the past year or so it has been fitted with new control levers, new motor springs with rubber damping sleeves, the idler wheel bushes have been replaced, a new spark suppressor has been fitted and all the other springs have been renewed. The platter was looking a bit flaky so has been sprayed in satin black but the original Garrard rubber platter mat is in good condition and not perished.

The arm is a Moth RB250 variant fitted with an Isokinetik Isoend stainless steel stub and 144g counterweight. There are other lighter counterweights available which may be better suited to your choice of cartridge. The Shure cartridge seen in the pics is not included in the auction. The signal leads exit through a hole in the rear of the plinth but are not anchored in any way.

The turntable unit is mounted on a piece of 18mm Trespa (a sort of dense, solid laminate material often used for lab worktops) supported by an adjustable point at each corner of the satin lacquered cherry plinth, The arm is also mounted on a piece of Trespa secured to the main board with high tensile bolts. There is no lid but I notice that many 301 users seem to do without. The mains power is supplied via a standard IEC lead although purists may wish to change that for a hard wired connection.

Obviously this is a heavy and pretty delicate item so it’s a case of collection only unless you are reasonably local in which case I could deliver. I’m sorry but I don’t really have the facilities to pack this adequately to withstand the mistreatment dealt out by brain-dead couriers who don’t understand the word “Fragile”. (You can tell I’ve had bad experiences before, can’t you? Yes, it was TNT!)

Preferred payment is cash on collection.
