GALE MODEL 4 COMPACTFLOOR-STANDING SPEAKERSThese were not amatched pair when I got them. One was a Model 4 and the other a Model 4i andhad a different (and non-working) tweeter. The Model 4 spec. I was familiarwith having previously had a pair prior to the arrival of my Missionfloor-standers. Examining both cabinets fordifferences I was pleased that both used the same Peerless SKO 130 bass/mid units and both hadthe same components in the crossover. The Model 4 uses a tweeter from Vifa(popular with many speaker manufacturers since the 80’s). I had one salvagedfrom a pair of Missions which I fitted. It is slightly smaller than theprevious 4i tweeter so there are somevinyl-wrap bubbles where the previous face-plate fitted. I have added extra acousticinsulation to the 4i cabinet to match the Model 4 spec. Finally, I have filled the bottom cavities with sand asrecommended by Gale which does make a difference, so much so that I have usedthem without spikes as they are so stable. The original weight of each speaker is 17.4lbs (7.9kg),with the sand added the weight of each has increased to 28.8lbs (13.0kg). If you own speakers with a cavity that permits sand filling, I canrecommend doing so. It’s a reversible upgrade so well worth experimenting with.Remember to use dry sand.These well reviewed, U.K. made speakers are 29.5″(75cms) tall x 8.75″ (22cms) deep x 7.5″ (19cms) wide. They are rearported so don’t place them too close to a wall. They are bi-wirable but havewire links for single wire connection.They are in fair used condition: there are some scuffs to thevinyl wrap which are minor, don’t show very well in the photos and (aside fromthe “bubbles” noted above) would hardly be noticeable in use. Thereare two grilles: one is in good condition, the other has a couple of smallholes and the “Gale” badge is incomplete. Cosmetics aside, and more importantly,they sound great! Cash on collection fromKingswood, Bristol BS15 is the onlyoption because of their size and weight with the sand in. Thanks for looking, I’ll do my best with questions.
