Conrad Johnson MV55 valve Power amplifier This is a beguiling amplifier. It does not excel in any one area, but overall presents a very satisfying listening experience. Power is moderate at 45 wpc, but adequate for most purposes. Sound is warm, lush, engaging, and OTH realistic. Bass is warm, and possibly a bit rolled off at the extreme bottom end. But there is enough there to hear details such as a bassist’s fingering along the neck of a bass, or a drummer hitting different drums. Midrange is where the action is. Vocals and most instruments are rendered with realistic tone and weight. Warm bass sometimes translates to chesty male vocals, but not in this case. Everything comes across as natural. Treble is a tad soft, but with great detail to bring out overtones of horns and strings, along with air and space around musicians. This amp is a great pairing for bright digital, and this amp is complimentary to vinyl. Soundstage width is natural, and depth is good. The plane of sound seems to be very slightly back from the centerline of the speakers, and overall perspective is probably just slightly behind the sweet spot of rows 10-15; but definitely not recessed. This is an amp that most should be able to live with for a long time. It always brings a smile to my face, that other amps fail to do. Don’t expect this amp to power big Planars, or speakers that require tons of power and control. This amp is a match for LS3/5a speakers, other monitor sized boxes, speakers with good efficiency and moderate loads, in small to med sized rooms.
