Celestion Ditton 15 Mk1 Studio Series Hifi Speakers 1960s 1970s Vintage (Surrey)

Cash on collection at Farnham, Surrey GU10. Sorry no shipping. I am available most days 9am to 5pm but not evenings.

These are the early original “studio series” Ditton 15s from the late 1960s. This particular version has fantastic sound and can contend with other classics like the B&W DM4, Kef 104, Spendor BC1, etc. I have recently owned Rogers LS3/5a and Yamaha NS10 but these early 15s are just as brilliant. There are not many vintage or modern speakers under 500 that actually sound as lush as these, or built as well as these.

Excellent for their age. The cabs have some age related marks/patina but the corners, edges and mitre joints are all in great shape. The only negative points are the grilles are missing the badges and they have close but not consecutive serial numbers. Both measure about 6 ohm DCR at the terminals and sound well matched. All the drivers are working perfectly and the sound is excellent from both speakers. They are made from plywood, not chipboard like the 1970s Dittons. The build quality of the cabinets is first rate. The side panels are lined with thick bitumen pads and cross braced.

I think these early Ditton 15 could be Celestion’s finest hour. They sound less muddled than the bigger Dittons and less strained than later models like the SL6. They have lovely tuneful mids, the HF1300 tweeter and bass driver are a sublime match. The bass quality is majestic, tuneful, smooth and quite deep. The passive ABR makes them quite efficient and it improves the control of subsonics which is why they are such great speakers for playing vinyl. Valve amps like Rogers Cadet or Quad II would be a great  match. The power rating is only 15 watts RMS but the sound output level is more than ample for domestic use.

They have screw terminals which take bare wires or spade connectors. I decided to keep them original but the terminal plate is easy to remove and each terminal will unscrew if you wanted to replace them with banana posts. They have high quality hard wired crossovers on the back of the terminal plate, also easy to access.

I can show them working with an amp (not included).
