Lovely sounding DAC with some serious upgrades! All main power caps replaced with premium quality Panasonic FM/FC range. The opamp power supply caps replaced with super grade Audio Note Kaisei! That’s the 4 larger caps gold caps. The output caps also got replaced with super grade Audio Note Kaisei! That’s the 2 smaller gold caps. All the audio path caps between the DAC chip itself and the opamps got replaced with premium grade polystyrene! This was very complex as it involved removing inferior quality SMD caps and replacing them with larger much higher quality ones. After those upgrades the sound completely changed to something far far superior to original! Original stock version could never compete with upgraded version.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better I built an extremely high quality PSU for it. The power supply has a main filter to remove unwanted noise which then feeds the audiophile grade toroidal transformer which in turn powers the Ultra low noise linear power supply board. I also upgraded the smaller power board caps with Panasonic FM/FC caps and fitted a high grade polypropylene cap to the output section. The power board also has Schottky diodes and will beat similar PSU’s costing up to 150 quite easily! I also fitted a ferrite core at the end of the power cable to further remove any noise picked up by the cable.
Result? A very sweet sounding DAC! Balanced across the board, not bassy or harsh. Nice forward sounding mid range incredibly clear and detailed. No surprise there then! The Audio Note caps cost a bomb but quality of sound speaks for itself, in short worth every penny! I am a little DAC obsessed and for me sound quality matters a lot so rest assured you will not be disappointed! The PSU also played a massive part in contributing to the quality.
Using it is very straight forward, no drivers needed for the USB. I will also supply the cable. I had this running on a USB to digital converter and used the coax digital input of the DAC using windows based computer but works just as well on a MAC. I would say wire everything up first then power on the DAC for smooth operation! I tested it with many amps and in all cases sounded very clear detailed and very enjoyable! Please don’t compare this to similar priced DACs and assume that it cannot compete. It can not only compete but you will find it smashes the competition. This not your average DAC this is an Amp King DAC!
