The Centaur Minor was the smallest model in a 3-strong range which included the Centaur and Centaur Major. It was US company Apogee’s first hybrid production designed for easier use, space and wallet ! It shares the same 26″ Kapton Aluminium midrange-tweeter ribbon as in the much-loved Apogee Stage. This is married to a 6.5″ Vifa bass driver situated half-way up the baffle for time alignment. Apogee successfully overcame the difficulties of such a design to produce a truly outstanding speaker. At the end of it’s run 1991- 1994 , Apogee included a information note to add a reflex port to the sealed woofer enclosure. This helped address the one criticism being that of a lack of bottom-end clout. For most this was not an issue and the sealed cabinet produced great speed and articulation of the lower registers but for others it was not enough. Adding the port has a trade-off but it’s well worth it in our view. The greater bass extension allows the speaker to breathe more easily and in small rooms the low setting on the rear toggle (woofer cut) switch provides the best balance in overall performance. Huge amps are really not needed or welcome, the Minor works best with valve amps of between 25 and 50wpc and solid-state between 50wpc and 100wpc. 86db. Just under a Metre tall, 35cm wide and 20cm deep. Set-up is everything with all Apogee’s and Minor’s are no different. Get it right and you’ll be amazed at the soundstage. This example has the reflex ports.
The speakers are in very good condition for there 27 year vintage and the ribbons have no sag, twist or bows. There are no buzzes or distortion from either ribbons or drive units. There are no floor spikes included. Grills are available but one has a break in the frame.
