ACOUSTIC ENERGY REFERENCE 1 LOUDSPEAKERS IN A PIANO EBONY FINISH.
IN A FULLY WORKING EXCELLENT USED CONDITION.
THERE ARE SOME VERY MINOR MARKS AND BUFFS, MOST OF WHICH COULD EASILY BE POLISHED OUT.
AND THERE IS A VERY SMALL DING ON THE BACK CORNER OF ONE OF THE LOUDSPEAKERS, (HIGHLIGHTED IN PICTURES).
THESE SPEAKERS HAVE SERVED ME WELL FOR MANY YEARS AND ARE ONLY FOR SALE DUE TO MY RECENT CHANGE TO FLOORSTANDERS.

The Reference 1 was launched in 2011 incorporating all our technological expertise in speaker design.With the Reference Series weve sought to improve upon every aspect of current speaker design to create a true, balanced, dynamic, wide-bandwidth and minimal colouration loudspeaker.Cabinet: Constrained laminate layer construction for maximum resonance damping. A specially designed 7mm MDF/3mm high density rubber/5mm MDF sandwich material is used throughout the cabinet enclosure to minimise resonance and external cabinet noise.Bass Driver: Huge underhung motor assembly for maximum linear accuracy and control. The motor system comprising twin-wound aluminium voice-coils is thermally bonded to the aluminium cone for absolute minimum distortion and long-throw pistonic accuracy.Tweeter: The now well-established Vifa Ring-radiator tweeter is used here in our own custom, upgraded specification. Acoustic Energy is built on the success of its first product, the AE1. But the company recognises that no brand progresses by looking back. The new Reference 1 speakers are the companys current take on what a small stereo pair should be like.
Theyre pretty close in size to the originals at just over 31cm high, but take the design further by sandwiching rubber between two MDF sheets for its cabinet.
Acoustic Energys trademark metal mid/bass driver remains. In this case its an all-alloy unit with a hefty motor system to allow high volumes without over-heating.
The tweeter is the brands favoured ring-dome, refined to improve smoothness and transparency, and surrounded by a faceplate that controls dispersion and integration with the mid/bass unit.
Unfazed by high volume
And they sound very impressive. They arent fazed by high volume or seismic bass: play the likes of Tchaikovskys 1812 Overture or Massive Attacks Flat of the Blade and the Reference 1s exude confidence.
Theyre immensely solid in the bass, and deliver transients with precision and punch. Your sofa wont shake, but the 1s deliver satisfying musical punch.
Theyre also unforced and refined through the higher frequencies; feed them an edgy recording and theyll make the most of things rather than sounding hard.
Add a good sense of timing, a nicely judged tonal balance and the ability to work well at low levels, and you have a terrific pair of small speakers.
If you want a classic pair of mini monitors, buy the AE1s. If you want a taste of Acoustic Energy’s future direction, the Reference 1 speakers are where its at.
