Aaron Hyperboloid Audio Drivers/Speakers – 168mm

Technical Description: These speakers were the type deployed in the well regarded Australian-designed and built Aaron Speaker systems – HSS-600, HCC-600 and HMF-600.
Special Note:
These are new old stock (NOS) and manufactured exclusively for Betetec Pty Ltd – well known and regarded manufacturers of the audiophile-quality Aaron Speaker range. These were part of a bulk purchase of audio equipment when the company folded a couple of years ago and are all brand new and been in storage in the original cartons since then.
The following extract from a review of the Aaron HMF-600 Speakers appearing in Australian HiFi Reviews in 2011 describes the hyperboloid design:”Aarons HMF-600MkII is a four-driver, three-way floor-standing bass reflex design. Becausethe two 168mm-diameter bass drivers havehyperboloid diaphragms, Ill have to use theword diaphragm to refer to them, because,unlike almost all other bass driver diaphragms, they are not cones. The peculiar diaphragm profile not only eliminates standing waves, but also means that LEstrangecould eliminate the troublesome and weightydust cap, thus reducing mass. Speaking ofwhich, the diaphragm itself is already extraordinarily low in mass, being made from acarbon-coated laminated paper. Also, unlikemost drivers, the voice coil is not fixed to the cone at its centre. Instead LEstrange usessomething like a miniature cone beneaththe hyperboloid diaphragm so the voice coilends up driving the hyperboloid diaphragmat one third of its circumference rather thanat the centre, like normal designs. And yes, Iknow that Mordaunt-Short also uses a similartechnique in its high-end designs, but actually Aaron beat M-S to the punch by severalyears! This system makes the driver dia-phragm exceptionally rigid, so cone motionis almost perfectly piston-like at low-frequencies, which is the Holy Grail for all driver designers. As for the voice coil itself, its 25mmin diameter and comprised of polyesterimidecoated copper wire, insulated with a Class Hmodified polyester resin. This wire has excellent thermal endurance, solvent resistanceand exhibits a low coefficient of friction toimprove windability, and its wrapped arounda solid but light-weight aluminium former.The driver chassis is pressed steel at the endof which is a substantially-sized, centre-vented magnet, to the rear of which is attached asecondary, flux-cancelling magnet. Whereasall previous Aaron drivers have used impregnated cloth surround suspensions rather than the more usual foams and rubbers, theflexible suspension on the HMF-600MkII ismade from a unique plastomer called aeratedpolyurethane which LEstrange says is lighterthan rubber, lasts longer, and doesnt hardenwith age but has rubbers damping charac-teristics. A final design improvement relatedto the roll surround is a unique overlappingtrim ring. In Aarons design, the trim ringoverlaps the surround, which LEstrange saysreduces turbulence.At 300Hz, the two bass drivers are crossedto the single 132mm midrange driver which,like the bass drivers, also has a hyperboloidcone and the same voice-coil/cone couplingsystem. This driver, in turn, is crossed over
at 5kHz to a 25mm Vifa XT25 dual ringradiator tweeter, with its characteristic centrewave-guide.”
