Slimline it may be, but that doesn’t prevent the Pioneer VSXS510 from offering the full AV experience, including networking with Apple AirPlay and Spotify as highlights.
HALF-SIZED CASING
With a height of just 85mm the Pioneer VSX-S510 is around half as tall as similarly priced AV receivers. This means that it fits where others simply won’t go and, crucially, has room to keep cool. It also happens to be one of the cleanest and most subtle looking AV receivers on the market. A clear display is flanked by just a couple of controls and a trio of sockets.
FULL-SIZED POWER
Yet, despite its compact size, the VSX-S510 compromises little when it comes to power. 65 watts per channel gives plenty of power for all but the largest rooms. The power comes from a Class D amplifier that’s not only powerful but cool running, too, making it ideal for the compact VSX-S510. A further, unusual, benefit with this AV receiver is the powered subwoofer output. This allows the receiver to be used with a passive subwoofer in addition to the more usual powered sub (x2 if required). Alternatively, the sixth powered channel can be used as a further rear channel, giving a 6-channel output.
FULLY COMPREHENSIVE NETWORKING INCLUDING APPLE AIRPLAY
The VSX-S510 comes with a LAN connection for integration with your home network. There’s also Apple AirPlay compatibility, DLNA streaming and an optional wi-fi dongle for wireless connectivity. Apple’s AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream music from any compatible Apple device – without the need for a separate home hub. DLNA streaming gets you access to music stored on your PC, laptop or NAS and plays it through the receiver. There’s also access to Internet radio and music services, including access to Spotify, making the VSX-S510 a fully comprehensive streamer. There’s also the option of connecting via wi-fi, using the optional AS-WL300 dongle.
SPOTIFY CONNECT
This Pioneer also has the advantage of offering Spotify Connect. Spotify Connect uses your existing Spotify account but seamlessly transfers it between sources. So, for example, you might be listening to Spotify on your mobile device then, when you arrive home, transfer it your Pioneer home system at the touch of a button! Wherever you use 3G or 4G, wi-fi or LAN, AirPlay, Bluetooth or UPnP, Spotify Connect simply keeps the music following – seamlessly.
IMPROVED CONTROL
In addition to offering multiple networking possibilities, the VSXS510 keeps control better than ever. The new iControlAV2013 app lets you control more functions than ever via your smartphone or tablet (Apple or Android). This app now offers a new feature that enables you to access the music libraries stored on your smartphone or tablet and create playlists that can be streamed wirelessly to the receiver, all from within the app. It can also access a massive range of adjustment settings, including a new ECO setting adjustment to lower energy use. The Pioneer VSX-S510 is compatible with Air Jam. Air Jam is a Bluetooth-based app that lets a group of people connect with their iPhones, iPod Touch or iPads and add their songs to the receiver playlist. In effect it’s a local, social network for music and works well with the VSX-S510 (optional AS-BT200 Bluetooth adaptor required).
NO COMPROMISE CONNECTIVITY
With five HDMI sockets, the VSX-X510 has full size connectivity. New for this model, the sockets allow for 4K pass-through as well as offering 3D and ARC support. With 4K TVs now readily available, this is an AV receiver that’s well-equipped to support future technology. ARC (Audio Return Channel) cuts down on the cabling required as a single HDMI connection between your TV and AV receiver carries both the video image to the TV and the TV’s audio back to the receiver. In addition to this, the latest slimline Pioneer AV receiver also comes with front-mounted HDMI and USB sockets. The HDMI is MHL compatible, letting you connect up a suitable smartphone and stream video via HDMI right up to Full 1080p HD resolution. Designed to work with an iPad/iPhone/iPod, the USB socket will also accept music files from USB memory sticks. The VSX-S510 also comes with a front-mounted mini jack that’s perfect for connecting your portable MP3/iPod or other device. Finally, there’s a wide collection of other digital and analogue connections.
SIMPLE SET-UP
As well as looking and sounding great, the VSX-S510 is also easy to set-up. Thanks to MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System), you can fine-tune your system at the touch of a button. Created in conjunction with the professional sound engineers at AIR studios in London, MCACC is unique to Pioneer AV receivers and one of the best of its type. Working in perfect synergy with MCACC, Phase Control ensures that audio reaches the listener ‘in phase’, improving the clarity and precision of sound.
For the full-fat experience from a decidedly skinny receiver, the Pioneer VSX-S510 punches well above its (modest) weight.
