LEAK STEREO 70 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER FOR SPARES OR REPAIRS/No. z/83734The Leak Stereo 30 was reputedly the first commercially available domestic transistorised amplifier in 1963. Listed in Imagine Home’s “most significant amplifiers of all time” at number 9! (http://www.imaginhome.com/images/partenaires/ten-most.pdf) Produced with audiophile listeners in mind and following on from Leak’s great 1950s valve amplifiers, it still sounds involving and detailed today. The Stereo 30 Plus, produced from 1967 is different to the original as it has silicon rather than germanium capacitors and four removeable “daughter” boards carrying left and right power and pre-amp stages which slot into the main or “mother” PCB. The Stereo 70 was introduced at the same time with double the power (30 wpc) and two sets of speaker outputs. When Rank took over HJ Leak in 1969/70, they re-modelled the case of the Stereo 30 Plus and called it The Leak Delta 30 with only a few minor modifications. the same treatment was given to the Stereo 70 which became the Delta 70.No “hair shirt” design as it gives flexibility with headphone jack, tone controls, choice of gain on two inputs. Also has two AC outlets for powering other Leak components, especially their tuners. Given the period it was produced with stereo yet to be universal, the front panel has a knob which offers stereo, mono, and two channel input of left and right channels. One pair of speaker outputs which are the Leak asymmetrical 2 pin plugs. This example is not working: The amplifier switches on but there is no sound. On switch on the DC fuse blows, whilst the AC fuse remains intact. Internally, looks complete with no obviously burnt out components. Obviously given the switch on blow, no other components can be assumed to be working.Condition: Fascia broken in bottom left corner, otherwise good with a few minor marks, some loss of lettering around controls and silver paint around fronts of control knobs. Top and bottom covers good.
On the front fascia from left to right: input selector for Tuner A, Tuner B, Record, Playback, Phono 1 and Phono 2; Stereo/Mono selector; bass and treble tone controls; balance; record/monitor selector; treble filter; power on/off/ volume knob with red pilot lamp; headphone jack socket with dummy blanking plug.On the back from left to right: Captive mains cable terminated with UK 3 pin mains plug, DC and AC fuse carriers, voltage selector (110, 117, 130, 210, 230, 250V), 2 AC output sockets, ground/earth screw, case mounting bolt, 2 pairs of speaker terminals (4-15 Ohms), tape record and replay phono sockets, High and Low gain switchable phono and line level inputs, fixed phono and tuner/microphone inputs. When working the sound of these amplifiers is smooth, surprisingly powerful with good bass, excellent detail, separation and imaging with good placement of voices and instruments. Vinyl sounds good through a very good phono stage, the kind of equipment which is an expensive outboard option on many modern amplifiers. Phono inputs are suitable for Moving Magnet (10mV) and Ceramic (30mV) and are labelled “Pick up 1 and 2”.Full data, schematic and instruction manual from: https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/leak/stereo-70.shtml
