Pair of proper old school solid black Monitor 9 speakers dating from the mid 90s from Monitor Audio. These are in almost perfect condition but for some age related wear to cabinets and grills. The woofers and tweeters are like new and still have the glaze and sheen that put many a new and so called high end speaker to shame with shear quality of sound that ooze depth and precision like youth of today still cant believe was around in the 90s.
I looked long and hard to get this pair of beauties back in the day and literally had to go to London to get them and it was well worth it. They got used much for the first couple of years then got packed away in family loft till now. These really are a blast from the past in no uncertain terms. The cost back then was 250 which in todays money equates to a pretty healthy budget of at least double, as back in the 90s most half decent speakers were around 100-150. These are a fantastic piece of British design and engineering when nothing from japan let alone Europe were even coming close to quality of sound.
I’ve had them plugged into my digital amp and they still sound beautiful with absolutely no rattles or clanks and more importantly no signs of any damage or wear to woofers rubber or the tweeters high resonance. The fact is the only damage it does have are age related where the grills could use recovering and the cabinets may (or may not) need a little touch up of back to black. However there is a small bash to the top rear corner of one the cabinets that to be honest you would be hard pushed to notice and as all adverts seem to say ‘they do not effect the sound and function’, really it doesn’t at all and I personally guarantee it.
Now here in lies the problem…..What are they worth? Or even, are they worthy of anyone considering? I’ve asked around and according to a well known specialists second hand hifi retailer I know, well he basically said I should put them up for at least 200 as you just cant get hold of them anymore and they are proper classics. My trouble is that ive a heart and I just want them to go to a good home where good vibes will be a plenty, so i’ve decided bidding starts at 60 not a penny less with no reserve and sold as is. Buyer to collect or you can arrange courier once ive found something half decent to pack them into, but please contact me first if you are going to courier them.
