This unit was sold in Denmark in the 1960s and is mounted in its original Ortofon plinth. I have used it for the last seven years and have lavished a number of (quite expensive) upgrades on it.The cost of these upgrades alone is around 2000.
The top aliminium platter is from Schopper. The top platter currently costs 450 (http://www.schopper.ch/index.php?page=aluminium-upperplatter). The anti-magnetic heavy platter is from Schopper. It currently costs 1,143 (http://www.schopper.ch/index.php?page=non-mac-platter). It is the singel most important change you can make to this turntable if you are using a moving coil cartridge. I have used a number of Ortofons on this unit (for different SPUs, MC7500, and a Jubilee). The effect is most pronounced with the SPUs which track better and generally sound better with the non-magnetic platter. The motor suspension has been upgraded with Mk. II suspension towers. I have forgotten what I paid, but Audiosilente offer similar ones at 47 (http://www.audiosilente.com/spare-parts-thorens-td-124-td-135-td-184-td-121-td-224-thorens-td-124-motor-suspension-rods-mk1-to-mk2.html)The rubber motor suspension has been replaced with Hanze HiFi springs (https://shop.hanzehifi.nl/product/thorens-td-124-motor-decoupling-springs/). These cost 39.The motor has been rebuilt with new oilite bearing sleeves, felts, and torlon thrust-pads from Audiosilente. These cost 43 (http://www.audiosilente.com/spare-parts-thorens-td-124-td-135-td-184-td-121-td-224-e50-motor-kit-sintered-bronze-bushing-thorens-td-124-135-224.html)The idler wheel has been replaced with one from Audiosilente. It cost 51The thrust pad has been upgraded with a gun metal/torlon unit from Jim Campbell (end cap) and User510 (torlon thrust pad). I have forgotten the cost. The clutch (lifting) mechanism has had new pads fitted and it has been properly adjusted. The upper platter does not scrape against the mechanism when playing a record and the aluminium platter is lifted perfectly when the lift is engaged. The armboard is is made of walnut and is ready to be drilled for whichever arm you wish. I have used a number of arms with this machine: Schick and SME 12 arms, Ortofon SMG212 and Mrch DP6. All of them are wonderful complements to this classic turntable.
The mat is a felt mat like the one used on a Linn. I found this to be the best interface to the upper platter. The pop-up centre spindle is the original Thorens unit. The plinth is original and was made by Ortofon (or at least badged by them). Today, a similar plinth (without the cast Ortofon badge) will set you back to the tune of 370 (http://www.schopper.ch/index.php?page=console-black).
Danish electrical standards required changes to the voltage switchover arrangements. These were performed by Ortofon before the units were sold. The presence of the DEMKO plate signifies that these changes were performed in accordance with Danish safety rules.
