The primary aims have always been tonal neutrality, low colouration, transparency and wide band width. Another major consideration is consistent and trouble free performance from a system over many years of operation. To ensure this only high quality components are used in the construction of our loudspeakers. From time to time we introduce a new model, when we do the new design must posses the strengths of its predecessor, plus other substantial advances in order to justify the change. Our new designs tend, therefore, to be few and far between.Constant background research does, however, yield improvements in our understanding of loudspeaker systems and advances in the performance of drive units. The use of Polypropylene as a cone material, and the recent introduction of high performance metal dome tweeters has meant that advances are possible. The fruits of this research and increased understanding of system behaviour has yielded new systems of advanced design and performance.STUDIO 1a System DescriptionWe decided to look at ways of improving and refining the traditional low colouration studio monitor concept as exemplified in the Studio 1, its predecessor. The result is the Studio 1a, a new Bi-Wireable, two way bass reflex loaded studio monitor system. The Bass Mid-range Drive UnitConsidered the ‘Heart’ of any system the Bass mid-range driver must encompass the most important musical octaves. The Studio 1a’s main drive unit has been optimised and refined over many years by experimenting with cone flare and surround material as well as construction techniques. This highly refined drive unit not only sounds transparent but will also produce high levels due to its high temperature motor system and powerful magnet. The High Frequency Drive UnitTo capitalize on the high level of transparency produced by the new Bass mid-range unit, a tweeter of exceptional performance was required. The 34mm Aluminium dome tweeter used offers an outstandingly smooth acoustic performance and greater power handling.CabinetThe other major contribution to the sound of a system is the cabinet. Even small movements of the cabinet walls create a surprisingly large output due to the size of the radiating area. Research in the past has shown that the critical midband is less coloured if the walls of the cabinet are kept comparatively thin and heavily damped internally with Bitumen pads. This approach leaves the midband untouched but imparts a certain ‘woodiness’ to the upper bass region. We have experimented with cabinet wall materials, thicknesses and different internal damping to control the cabinets midband output without colouring the upper bass region. The Bass Reflex PortIn ported loudspeakers there is also a certain amount of undesirable acoustic output produced from the port created by air modes within the cabinet. We have reduced this as far as possible in several ways.Firstly, the port is made as small as is practicable, with smooth entrance and exit contours to improve airflow. The port is placed at a position where the internal air modes are at their least influential.Secondly, the special foam lining of the cabinet creates in effect, a mini-anechoic chamber within the loudspeaker cabinet which damps internal reflections very effectively. The Crossover EqualizerThe job of the crossover network in any system is to equalize and combine the acoustic output from the drive units. The more irregular the amplitude responses of the drive units, the harder the job of the crossover.Due to the very smooth responses of the units used in this design we do not need the crossover to perform complex equalisation. This means a more transparent sounding network is made possible because we can utilize the drivers responses to form part of the crossover function. All the components used in the crossover are of the highest quality and are carefully positioned for minimal interaction on a robust fibre-glass printed circuit board. The design of the crossover also allows the system to be Bi-Wire connected to the power amplifier providing a more transparent link than the conventional method of connection. Subjectively Bi-Wiring produces results which are similar to the power amplifiers being moved closer to the loudspeakers an connected to them by very short cables.Bi-WiringCAUTION: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY TO OBTAIN THE BEST FROM YOUR SYSTEM AND AVOID THE POSIBILITY OF DAMAGE TO YOUR AMPLIFIER.The latest generation of Rogers speakers have the facility for Bi-Wiring. This entails running separate leads from your power amplifier terminals to the low frequency and high frequency crossover inputs. We have found this to improve the stability and depth of the stereo image, and is well worth the extra outlay on cable. To convert the loudspeakers, remove the wire links between the input terminals and consult the wiring diagrams.Positioning the Loudspeakers for Best ResultsThe Studio 1a loudspeakers are designed to give best results when mounted upon rigid stands approximately 40cms high.To achieve best room match at low frequencies the loudspeakers should be placed asymmetrically with respect to side and rear walls. This will spread the effects of the low frequency room cancellations, producing the smoothest and most extended bass performance. Such placement particularly with the loudspeakers angled inwards, and left and right hand loudspeakers placed at equal distances from their respective side walls, will have the least detrimental effect on stereo image clarity.Ancillary EquipmentYour Rogers loudspeakers will bring out the best qualities of the other equipment in your system. The source (CD, turntable, tuner, aux), should always be of the highest possible quality and the amplifier should be correctly matched to the loudspeakers in power output. Rogers loudspeakers present an easy amplifier load, to make the most of the power available, and are efficient enough to produce reasonable sound levels with low powered amplifiers. The drive units and crossovers are constructed with the newest high technology materials and, therefore, have very high power handling capabilities. Under normal domestic listening situations the loudspeakers will never be damaged and do not require protection circuits or fuses which may degrade the sound quality.PLEASE NOTE: A low powered amplifier used at a high volume setting is much more likely to damage your loudspeakers than a high powered amplifier used at a comfortable setting, due to amplifier clipping on musical transient signals. It is preferable to use a 200 watt amplifier at half-power into 100 watts loudspeakers than a 50 watt amplifier at full volume into the same loudspeakers.Connecting cables have an important effect upon the sound quality and your Rogers dealer will advise you on the correct cable for your system. All system connections should have clean and tight contacts. Cleaning of all signal path connections in your system is recommended periodically.Correct loudspeaker phasing will be achieved when each loudspeakers red or positive terminal is connected to the amplifiers positive output terminal and the loudspeakers black or negative terminal is connected to the amplifiers negative output terminal. If after connection the sound is lacking in low bass and produces a diffuse stereo image, check the connections to ensure correct phasing has been achieved, if in doubt contact your Rogers dealer.AestheticsTo achieve visual harmony in a domestic setting, Rogers loudspeakers are finished in real wood veneers which maintain their appearance for many years if cleaned periodically with furniture polish. Under no circumstances should sandpaper or similar materials be used to clean the cabinets. Should major cabinet damage occur, Rogers service department offer a repair or replacement service either direct or through your local Rogers dealer. The correct response from your loudspeakers is achieved with the grilles IN PLACE. Removal of the grilles will compromise the systems mid and high frequency performance. The best way to clean the grilles is with a clean soft brush.Technical SpecificationFrequency response:45 Hz – 20 kHz, +/- 2 dBImpedance:8 ohms NominalSensitivity:89 dB @ 1m for 2.83 volts inputMaximum Sound Pressure Level:107 dBA (pair @ 2m)Power Handling:200 watts unclipped programmeRecommended Amplifier Power:10 – 150 watts per channelDrive Units:Rogers 205mm cast chassis Polypropylene cone Bass/Midrange driver of advanced acoustic design, with high flux magnet and KAPTON voice coil former.
