The Facts!
Unlike some other turntable manufacturers Rega Research do NOT supply replacement lubricant bearing oil for their turntable sub-platter spindles nor do they encourage customers to replace the bearing oil themselves. There is no ‘Rega Original Bearing Oil’. Rega don’t sell it.
However they do specify exactly what oil should be used (to their dealers) These are:
Comma Hypoid EP80,
orCastrol EPX 80W/90
orShell Spirax EP90.
These are lubricants made for car gear assemblies. And are in fact the ones that Rega themselves use in all their turntable sub-platter spindle & bearing hub and bush assemblies. They run to about 10-15 for a litre from Halfords. That is enough to replace the oil in the hub five thousand times.
In the past, getting your turntable serviced was pretty easy. As there were many dealers able to do this. These days when the cost of a service is more than the cost of the turntable and the dealers have been de-skilled, servicing increasingly has to be done at home.
Using any other type of oil ‘upgrade’ despite the claims made by the snake oil merchants selling you 5 ml of oil, for twenty quid  or thirty bucks, will not improve the sound or operation of the turntable, it will only degrade it.
Rega work to very exacting tolerances, and have precisely factored in the viscosity and density of the oil when making the kit, so if it’s good enough for them and the dealers, it should be good enough for everyone.
What you will find in the the package you’ll receive is a dropper bottle with 4ml of Castrol 80w/90 EPX gear oil. + detailed step by step instructions.
This is enough to replace the lubricant in your turntable hub at least fifteen times.
All you’ll need apart from the oil is a little Acetone Based Nail Varnish remover, and some cotton buds or cotton wool.
The printed instructions that will be enclosed are based on REGA guidelines for Official REGA dealers so have been somewhat simplified to take into account what you’ll find at home – most people don’t own torque wrenches for example;  and needless to say all work you do on your turntable is carriedout at your own risk.
